TELC offers specialized advanced workshops in grammar, pronunciation, listening and speaking, reading, writing, and TOEFL preparation. These courses are for advanced students. All new students must pass the placement test before they register. Please note that the workshop offerings vary each semester. Call (718) 482-5360 for more information.

TOEFL iBT Preparation (2 sections)

Prepare for the new Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) and improve your overall language skills at the same time! Instruction will focus on listening, speaking, reading, writing, advanced grammar and vocabulary development, and useful test taking strategies. Students will also practice the new TOEFL on-line in a computer lab.

Mastering Academic Vocabulary and Comprehension Skills

Are you getting ready to apply to college? Do you need help learning how to understand academic texts and specialized vocabulary? If so, this is the course for you. You will learn to understand and use academic vocabulary effectively in oral and written work, and will acquire useful reading strategies that will help you achieve academic success.

Pronunciation and Idioms Workshop

Do you find it difficult to communicate in English in your everyday life? Would you like to speak more clearly using appropriate idioms for various occasions? If so, this workshop is for you!
  • Learn common idiomatic expressions that native speakers use every day
  • Work on the most common pronunciation difficulties as well as individual ones so that you can be understood clearly and easily
Each student will receive a personalized pronunciation evaluation.

Writing Workshop for Advanced Students (2 sections)

This workshop is for students who already speak English very well, but want to improve their skills in writing and review English grammar. Students will review problem areas in English grammar and practice writing simple compositions, letters, reports and memos. In addition, students will learn how to locate their own mistakes and correct them.

Writing Workshop for Intermediate Students
Tuesday and Thursday 6:50pm-9:20pm

This workshop is for students who can speak English well, but who have difficulty writing English. Students will learn about spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph development and essay organization. They will also learn how to find their own errors and correct them.

Grammar Workshop

This course is for advanced students who speak English very well, but who want a comprehensive review of English grammar. Students will analyze spoken and written English to become familiar with the advanced structures of the language. They will also receive intensive practice in using these structures through a variety of exercises. The goal of this course is to improve students' ability to communicate by helping them to understand how grammar communicates meaning.

Listening and Speaking Skills through the Media
Monday and Wednesday 6:50pm-9:20pm

This course is for advanced students who want to improve their listening and speaking skills and expand their vocabulary.  Class materials will include public commentary programs on a variety of current topics from radio and TV.  Students will learn to discuss issues, support opinions, work on relevant grammar, broaden their vocabulary and write summaries.  Through these activities students will expand their awareness of current issues as well as gain more confidence in expressing themselves in English.
